It’s confession time: I sing in the car. You may be wondering why that is a “confession”, plenty of people sing in the car. It just seems to come naturally—you drive down the road, windows open, you’re all alone in your little car bubble, and you belt out to whatever happens to come on the radio or your favorite sing-along playlist.
If you turn up the car radio loud enough, you can’t even really hear yourself and you can imagine that you are just as talented as the artist performing. That’s where my second confession comes in: I’m a terrible singer. I’m one of those awful, tone-deaf, cringe-worthy types, and if you have ever had the unfortunate experience of hearing me sing, I sincerely apologize.
Singing in the car is a popular pastime and while plenty of car performers are like me, there are plenty more who are actually decent and even excellent singers. Many folks have a great singing voice and a good ear, but don’t perform professionally. Unless you ride with them in the car or overhear them in the shower (the other most popular location of secret singing), you may never even know that your friend, neighbour, or even a family member possesses such talent.
One young girl has been listening to her Dad sing in the car and noticed his wonderful voice. She recorded him singing George Jones’ classic “Tennessee Whiskey” so that she could share it with her friends. She’s obviously proud of her Dad. But, she had no idea that so many others would notice his amazing voice. The video quickly went viral and garnered millions of views. Even Ellen Degeneres is a fan and Dad and daughter appeared on her show. Now, Dad plans to compete on “The Voice”.
