After the arduous ordeal of giving birth, the best part of the whole experience for a new mom is seeing her newborn for the first time. Without a doubt, it’s a life-altering moment.
It’s practically inevitable at this moment that parents will carefully look at the baby’s face to see the resemblance to mom and dad. You might notice that the baby’s nose looks like dad’s or that the eyes look like mom’s.
It’s a moment that expectant moms often look forward to, but the real outcome can sometimes be a surprise.
A woman who recently gave birth, Judith Nwokocha, was very happy when she found out that she was going to have twins because she had a hard time getting pregnant. After two attempts of In vitro fertilization, she finally could experience the miracle of becoming a mother. Like many mothers, she often spoke to her unborn twins and hoped they would be healthy.
Unfortunately, a mishap occurred with Judith’s pregnancy at week 37, and her twins had to be delivered via cesarean section. Judith had a boy and a girl. She named the boy Kamsi and the girl Kachi. Kamsi weighed 6.1 pounds at birth, but Kachi was only 3.5 pounds.
Kachi’s low weight wasn’t the only unusual thing about her. In fact, the baby had such an unexpected appearance that Judith, an African-American woman, had some doubt that she was her own.
“The first time I saw her, I wondered if the nurse was handing me my baby, or someone else’s. I waited a few seconds for someone to tell me there was a mix up, but all I heard from the nurse was how beautiful she was,” Judith wrote in the Love What Matters Blog.
Judith never considered that one of her twins could possibly have light-colored skin. She thought her baby looked white, but the doctors informed her that the child was an albino. The baby shared her ethnic heritage, but the albinism rendered her skin a very light color.
Judith was aware that albinism came with some possible health complications, so she was concerned. Regardless of these feelings, Judith still marveled at her little girl, and she felt that she was utterly lovely.
She often tells the little girl that she’s beautiful, and she asserts that she wouldn’t want her to look any other way. Like most mothers today, she enjoys taking photos and posting images of the twins. Judith explains that she understands how important it is to educate her children to love themselves no matter what challenges they might encounter in the world.
